Understanding Key Terms: BPM, PLE, PLN, and VLE
After our recent article in Skills Portal discussing what an LMS (Learning Management System) is and how it differs from an LCMS (Learning Content Management System), we received a lot of questions from readers asking about other abbreviations. David Meredith from Virtual-IT shares, “We decided to explore the most frequently asked terms and provide a brief overview of their meanings.”
Here’s a breakdown of the top four requested abbreviations:
BPM: Business Process Management
One of the most common queries was, “What exactly is BPM?” These initials stand for Business Process Management. There’s a growing interest in BPM because some experts believe it shares similarities with eLearning and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
At its core, Business Process Management is a methodology that focuses on improving and optimizing the processes within a business to meet customer needs more effectively. Much like eLearning relies on LMS to facilitate learning, BPM connects technology, strategy, and process design to boost organizational efficiency. The aim is to streamline all aspects of a business while encouraging innovation and maintaining flexibility.
PLE: Personal Learning Environment
Next up is PLE, which stands for Personal Learning Environment. A PLE is a structure that empowers learners to manage their own educational journey. This can involve various tools and resources, allowing learners to:
Set their own learning goals
Control their learning process, including content selection
Collaborate with peers, mentors, or instructors to achieve their learning objectives.
In a PLE, learners take charge of their education, fostering a more personalized and self-directed approach to learning.
PLN: Personal Learning Network
A PLN or Personal Learning Network is the community of people a learner interacts with to exchange knowledge and ideas. These individuals, whether colleagues, mentors, or even online acquaintances, help shape and support the learner’s development.
With the rise of social media and online platforms, a PLN doesn’t require physical proximity, and learners can connect with others across the globe. The internet has made it easier than ever to share insights and collaborate, and learners can tap into an extensive network without ever meeting people face-to-face.
VLE: Virtual Learning Environment
Finally, we have the VLE or Virtual Learning Environment, a system designed to support learning in an online or digital space. While a Managed Learning Environment (MLE) focuses on administrative management, a VLE emphasizes the learning experience itself.
VLEs are typically web-based and offer a variety of features, such as:
Tools for assessments and quizzes
Content hosting
A platform for submitting assignments
Communication channels for students and instructors
Learner surveys and feedback
Analytics to track learner progress and engagement.
Many modern VLEs also integrate tools like RSS feeds, wikis, and blogs to create an interactive learning environment. Social networks—like Facebook, which, if it were a country, would be one of the top three most populated nations in the world—show the vast potential of connected, online communities. VLEs tap into this power to enhance collaboration and learning on a global scale.
