Due to legislation, it is now extremely important that SETA accredited training providers have policies and procedures for capturing and maintaining learner records as part of their QMS.
An LMS (Learning Management System) is software that provides a solution to this time consuming process.
Whilst the use of spreadsheets can record data, they are not as efficient nor as effective as a relational database i.e. Learner Information only has to be entered once on a relational database.
An LMS is a system that maintains learner records by managing the delivery and tracking of learners, learning interventions and learner assessments.
LMS’s are an effective solution to the maintenance of learner information, but previously, they were far from cost-effective, leaving companies without a solution to their problem.
However with the introduction of new competitively priced databases more and more companies are now using technology to overcome these onerous tasks and to free up their HR teams.
SETA’s often require that any software used to assist with the capturing of learner records must have been written within the South African NLRD (National Learner Record Database) specifications – so it’s important, when choosing an LMS to research your options carefully such as;
Is the system complete with all the latest SAQA Unit Standards and are they updateable?
Is it easy to build Qualifications, Learnerships and Skills Programmes?
How effective is reporting to the various stakeholders in the Learning Process?
Is Course Planning made easy?
Is the LMS locally produced?
Is it Cost Effective?
